“They will make sure your mental sanity is compromised ”

★☆☆☆☆

I flew delta airways return from Amstetdam Schipol to JFK...... Or atleast I was supposed to. After waking up for an early morning flight , going through security then finally while boarding the aircraft, an airhostess hears me coughing ( quite softly) she asks me if im okay, i respond yes... a bit under the weather perhaps, may i have some water? Finally I'm seated, on my way home when the next thing I hear is my name being called out to proceed with all my luggage to the front of the gate. I do as they say. The next thing I know they're treating me like I need to be quarantined. I'm an American citizen going back home and delta detains me at Schipol. Mind you- I'm a 19 year old female college student going back home now and this was my very first time in Europe, not only that but I'm out of cash at this point. So of course I'm scared now. I try and ask the lady who tooke off the plane what's going on and this is how the dialogue follows : " miss can u please tell me what's going on?"
Delta staff officer: ma'am please step away from the counter"
I move five steps away from the counter
Me: " may I know now what's going on ? "
Delta staff officer: " MA'AM PLEASE SIT DOWN!"
Me: " you've taken me off my flight , I do not have money for another one, will u arrange one ? That's all I'd like to know.
Delta staff officer: " MA'AM ALL UR LUGGAGE HAS BEEN TAKEN OFF THE PLANE,YOU ARE NOT GETTING ON THAT PLANE"
Me: " okay but that's not my question ...
Delta staff officer "SIT DOWN MA'AM!"

Now at this point I'm not only confused as to why my airline is telling at me , I'm also scared because no one will tell me anything nor do I have any money left.... So I do what any 19 year girl travelling alone would do who is out of money and being yelled at by the airline crew - I start crying.

So I'm sitting on a bench for a good 30 minutes crying while the airline staff continues to ignore me and walk by. Finally a female crew member arrives to escort me to the medical centre. I breathe and try to calms self down when I tell her the following exactly:
"ma'am , I'm sorry I think I may have angered ur fellow crew member with my earlier question, I just want u to know that I am only crying because I'm scared, your fellow staff won't tell me anything, I am in a foreign country with no more money and none of u will tell me what's going on, if I know whats happening or what the problem is I will be much more mentally capable as right I'm just scared."
Again, this is exactly what I said, thankfully she was much more understanding and actually took out the 2 minutes to speak to me properly and not like I was radioactive.
She told me i was being taken to the medical centre, showed me the transfer desk where I can come to later depending on what the centre says and that I do not have to pay for the return flight. Instantly I feel much calmer, im a college student, I'm not stupid, if they had just had a normal conversation with me earlier, it could have saved me a lot of distress.
She leaves me at the centre.

My flight began boarding at 7.55 am, I was at the airport waiting since 7 am. It is now 11.30 am , im at the centre and I've been through hours of the silent treatment by the delta staff and a good deal of mental stress.

Long story short, when the lady at the medical centre finally checks me out, she hands me a paper with the words " minor flu" highlighted as well as the words in capital "MEDICAL STAFF CALLED THIS NONSENSE" for removing me from the plane. She saw how shaken I was and made a couple of light joked to cheer me up like the following:

"Oh were u on delta?"
Me: "yes"
"We'll that's why this happened, delta is Shi'ite"
That got a chuckle from me instantly

She was very helpful, she rebooked me with KLM, when I reached the KLM desk the staff asked me " so what happened exactly? They took u off ur flight for no reason it seems ?" And we had a little laugh over it. Finally I was feeling comfortable enough to actually smile and be able to laugh. KLM gave me free voucher for eating and making a call and apologized even tho it was not their fault.

I finally made it home to New York City by a delay of a good 6 hours of mental stress and not knowing anything/ feeling powerless
Here's the thing though, I understand that regulations may have gotten strict etc but that doesn't mean u treat me like the way u did, I am a paying customer, on top of which I'm a young girl and I have no idea things like these even happen.... All I was asking for was information. I thought hospitality was a thing when choosing an airline, I mean if I'm going to be up in the air for a total of 7 or 8 hours, I want to be with people I can trust. Isn't that why the original term is air host and hostesses? And not just " random people on a plane that may or may not get you food and water depending on their mood"
No that's definitely not the term- unless u were me flying delta that day in which case the termshould be people that will cause a great deal of mental stress and then not even apologize.

Anyway so my flight was great with KLM......and Delta, I sincerely hope you don't do this to someone else. That would be much appreciated.
