Martin-from-UK's review of Air Transat

“Much better that price suggests”

★★★★★

written by Martin-from-UK on 16/06/2014

Return flights London Gatwick to Calgary in May/June 2014. The London to Calgary service has competition from BA and Air Canada (although they are Heathrow) and so I suspect Air Transat makes an effort on this route. Having read the earlier and somewhat negative reports of this airline I adjusted my expectations downwards. Being over £200 per person cheaper than BA and AC I wasn't expecting 5* service and knew that headphones and blankets were chargeable (and credit card payments in CAD only). Got seats allocated when booking (near front of airplane in both directions). Checked in on-line 24 hours before departure. Arrived for check-in in plenty of time and went through check-in very quickly and politely. The A330 both ways were recently refurbished and were excellent(may well have been the same aircraft both ways). Airbuses are generally quieter and smoother for passengers than 767s. Seat width and legroom as per any other airline. Two choices of hot food on way out (3 on way back) and includes free wine if you wanted it. You pay for spirits, beer and snacks. Cold breakfast + tea/coffee. Film choice a bit limited compared to others and audio choice very poor - take an iPad/player. A normal earpiece plug fits in socket on screen (not into the armrest where it's always in the way) which is brilliantly convenient. The touch-screen on the backrest in front was also very easy to use. Staff not the best but neither were they rude nor conspicuous by their absence. Flight to Calgary smooth and bang on time. Flight back to Gatwick arrived 15 mins early - the first time I've ever landed early at Gatwick. Don't bother with optionPlus - almost nothing extra for the money.
The on-line booking system (and on-line check-in facility) is quite poor and well behind most airline's on-line IT service. Persevere - and I advise logging in via Google Chrome and not IE. In short - you pay a lot less than BA or AC so don't expect Singapore Airlines standard of service. Don't check-in late at the airport and hope they don't have to put an old A330 on the route, as some of their old A330s have narrow seats.
My 5* rating is based on the low price and therefore value for money.
