“Air Canada cost me $$thousand of dollars due to delay ”

My family (15 of us) were returning to Orlando, FL from Athens, GR on Air Canada flight that was delayed four hours in Athens because of mechanical problems. Before I explain what generated costs for us, I would like to make you aware AC from Athens to Toronto (more than 10 hours), had NO entertainment at all- no movies, no television, no games, no radio, no electronics at all. We had 2 small children ages 6 and 7, and 5 teenagers from 15 yrs old to 18 yrs old. Air Canada offered to rent an iPad for $10 each on which they had downloaded some entertainment. The food was inedible.
The reason for my complaint is when we arrived four hours late in Toronto, they had randomly re-booked our passengers to various flights. The one that was most important was they put my 7 year old granddaughter on a different plane than her mother. We tried to correct this with the Connections Agent Supervisor and he flatly refused. He said as long as there was one adult traveling with her without regard to which adult, they would no rebook her with her mother.
They had most of our passengers on a flight through Montreal which required them to be in the and Montreal Airports for a combine 39 hours. Others they had flying out of Toronto after 48 hours. We ask for hotel and food vouchers and were told we are not giving you hotel vouchers because "there are no hotel rooms available in Toronto because this was the weekend (we were speaking with them at 23:00 on Saturday) of the 2015 Parapan Am Games, and The American Psychiatric Association were having a Conference. The Agent said we would "jus have to stay in the airport." He also said they had no blankets left that we could use. He offered us no assistance, nor did he tell us if we had any other options.
Clearly I could not have 15 people ranging in age from 6 yrs old to 71 yrs old sleeping in the Toronto airport for 48 hours. My son started researching hotels on the internet and I started calling hotels. Every hotel we found said they had no vacancy. In addition, with 15 people we need 6 rooms. My son finally found The Delta Hotel, which was an amazing hotel, but which was far out of our financial range. The rooms were over $575 each. We booked the rooms for one night and thank goodness I had enough available on my VISA card, but now I have to pay that off.
We continued this battle with Air Canada for 15 hours. I finally reached a person on the phone at the Air Canada Service Center who was willing to help me with my granddaughter. After being on the phone for 1 ½ hours, they finally agreed to put my granddaughter on her mother's flight. They still offered no assistance for our other passengers.
There is much more to tell about this nightmare. We are filing a formal complaint with Air Canada, but I have no expectation that they will reimburse us. I will now probably have to go to an attorney.
And finally, the Air Canada employees, except for a gentleman named Amin, were rude, disrespectful, and had no empathy. If you have any other option, I strongly recommend you do not fly Air Canada.
