Had disco 2 Td5's in the family since they were new and none have ever missed a beat. You hear of horror stories but honestly I think it has more to do with the lack of maintenance.
Bought one for myself this year for chips thinking it would be a flogged crock and sure it had been given a hard life but you wouldn't know it. Everything works on it, heaps of power since its been chipped. I use mine for towing race cars around when others use built trucks, then spends the other half of its life traversing the family property with insanely steep rocky spurs (Hill decent control) and washed out boggy tracks. Just make sure you buy one with centre diff lock or have it installed, works great with factory traction control.
Seriously even at top dollar they are still a bargain considering how much luxury 4x4 you get for the money! Can not recommend the series 2 diesel enough.

I'll also say when new they were wayyyyyyyyyyyyy ahead of their time in advanced technology. Stuff like common rail diesel, HDC, air supension self leveling, the efficiency of the ABS! Things Land Rover had developed on the RR.
Sure some brands had this stuff but very primitive basic versions of it. Discoveries had it fully fledged! Land Rover should go back to those days and start making Landies we all liked and used offroad!
